To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Giuseppe Garibaldi's birth, the Republic of San Marino has issued a series of three stamps depicting key moments in the life of the hero of two worlds.
The €0.65 stamp represents San Marino's special relationship of solidarity with Giuseppe Garibaldi. Aware of the risk, but confident in its historical neutrality, the Republic granted Garibaldi hospitality. This episode is illustrated through the arrival on Mount Titan of Garibaldi, Anita, and his Thousand, and with the portrait of Garibaldi as depicted on the bust that stands proudly in the square in San Marino dedicated to him. In the background is San Marino and the banner with the colors and coat of arms of the Republic. The second stamp is dedicated to the Thousand's exploits: on May 11, 1860, Garibaldi and his men landed in Marsala, welcomed by local revolutionary troops who joined the Thousand in the conquest of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The conquest is illustrated through the landing in Marsala, identified by the Porta Garibaldi that the city dedicated to the hero, and with the symbolic vision of the victorious battles that Garibaldi's men, united with the "Sicilian picciotti", fought against the Bourbon troops.
The €2.00 stamp depicts two historical episodes: the first concerns his long stay in South America from 1835 to 1846, where he led Uruguay's victorious War of Independence; the other concerns the epilogue of the historical event that saw Garibaldi as the protagonist of the Italian Wars of Independence until 1860, in Teano, when he handed over southern Italy to King Victor Emmanuel II. The stamp is completed by a portrait of the protagonist.
