Following the tribute paid to Giacomo Puccini in 2024, Poste San Marino S.p.A. continues to honour the masters who have left their mark on the history of music with the second instalment of the numismatic series “Great Composers of Music”, by dedicating the coin to Georges Bizet, an epitome of passion and innovation in the international music scene.
This is a significant occasion, which deserves to be celebrated and commemorated. Indeed, 2025 marks the 150th anniversary of the death of this romantic genius of French opera, regarded as one of the greatest composers of the 19th century, Georges Bizet, who was born in Paris on 25 October 1838 and died an untimely death at the age of thirty-six, on 3 June 1875.
The music of Bizet combines unforgettable melodies, great dramatic intensity and exotic atmospheres. Although he composed operas, as well as symphonic and chamber music, his fame is inextricably linked to Carmen (1875), one of the world's most performed masterpieces to date. The role of Carmen is one of the most captivating roles ever written for female vocalists, and the opera is among the most beloved in the repertoire today.
