A hand holding an olive branch offered by a dove is the image chosen by the San Marino Postal Service to celebrate, through a philatelic issue, the 80th anniversary of the foundation of the United Nations Organisation, of which the State of San Marino has been a member since 1992. The artwork, signed by the artist Paola Momentè, is reproduced in mini-sheets containing 4 stamps of 1.35 euro each, and wishes to recall the UN's constant commitment to the promotion of peace and the construction of a fairer and more united world.
It was in 1945 when, in San Francisco, fifty States came together with the intention of founding a new international order, based on cooperation, dialogue and respect for law. Out of that meeting came the Charter of the United Nations: a solemn pact in which the signatory states pledged to promote peace, collective security and collaboration between peoples, so that the tragedies of the Second World War would never be repeated.
