The ‘Archistars’ project, launched by Poste San Marino in 2024 with the Società di Mutuo Soccorso and the Order of Engineers and Architects of the Republic, continues. The series celebrates architecture and the great designers who have left their mark on the San Marino territory.
The protagonist of the 2025 issue is architect Giancarlo De Carlo, free thinker, intellectual and pioneer of participatory architecture. Throughout his career, he was able to put people, their needs and their stories at the centre of the architectural project.
A special stamp is dedicated to him, depicting the Porta di Dogana, also known as the Border Bridge, designed by De Carlo for the Republic of San Marino in 1993 and inaugurated in 1996. Printed in 20,000 sheets, each containing three €0.95 values, the stamp reproduces the work through images immortalised by the sensitive gaze of photographer Simone Maria Fiorani.
With its steel structure, a thirty-metre high flagpole and a suspended walkway, the Gate recalls the shape of a boat, evoking travel, identity and welcome. A symbol of the link between the past and the future, the work is also a tribute to Saint Marino, the founder of the Republic who came to this mountain from afar to lay the foundations of a free land, and the inscription ‘Welcome to the Ancient Land of Liberty’ on the façade welcomes those who arrive, uniting tradition and history.
