The 2 euro commemorative coin dedicated to Michelangelo Buonarroti, on the occasion of the 550th anniversary of his birth. The Renaissance genius trained in the workshop of Maestro Ghirlandaio. The obverse, designed by the sketch artist Silvia Petrassi, depicts in the centre the work ‘Cleopatra’, kept at the Casa Buonarroti in Florence, a magnificent pencil drawing made in 1535 for Tommaso de' Cavalieri, a great friend of Michelangelo's, considered to be one of the rare examples of the more intimate and delicate side of Michelangelo's production.
