The Statue of Liberty is located in Piazza della Libertà, in the city of San Marino, between the Parva Domus and the Palazzo Pubblico.
It depicts Liberty as a warrior woman striding proudly forward, her right hand outstretched and her left hand clutching a flag. Her head is crowned with a wreath featuring three towers, representing the fortified city of San Marino, which also appears on the national coat of arms.
The statue was commissioned by the German noblewoman Otilia Heyroth Wagener, then Duchess of Rancidello, in 1876 and was sculpted by the Italian sculptor Stefano Galletti using fine Carrara marble. Upon its completion, the countess donated the sculpture to the Republic of San Marino as a symbol of Freedom.
In recognition of the duchess’s gesture, she was granted permission to change her title to Duchess of Acquaviva.
