Poste San Marino is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Federation of Sammarinese Crossbowmen by issuing a commemorative medal.
The idea of reviving the ancient, statutory crossbow tournament—which took place on September 3, the day the Republic was founded, with records dating back to the 13th century, and which was regulated in the statutes of 1600, both for folkloric and tourism motives, and to make young people aware of the past experienced by the people of San Marino as they fought for their freedom. Historical costumes were designed and created in a wide variety of styles and colors, reflecting the fact that the crossbowmen, divided into nine teams, were and are meant to represent the nine Castles into which the territory of San Marino is administratively divided. On July 31, 1956, the San Marino crossbowmen made their first public appearance through the streets of San Marino, ascending and lining up at the Cesta, or the second tower.
The Federation of Sammarinese Crossbowmen is now well-known and highly regarded even beyond the borders of San Marino, having performed in numerous squares throughout Italy, Europe, and the rest of the world. It promotes the image of San Marino wherever it goes, carrying with it a message of peace and freedom so dear to the citizens of this ancient republic.
The design of the medal celebrates the Republic and pays tribute to the four groups of the Federation: Musicians, Costumed Performers, Flag-wavers, and Crossbowmen.
