In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly has declared the 21st of March International Day of
Forests, with the aim of increasing the awareness of the importance of the arboreal heritage, whose
safeguard is fundamental for the survival of our Planet. The 5 euro coin shows on the reverse side a
composition with a tree, which takes shape from two crossed hands, whose fingers branch off upwards,
as symbol of the necessary support of the mankind towards the forests. The foliage is composed by
different leaves, which represent the variety of trees all over the world. On the averse side of the coin,
the deep symbiosis between Monte Titano, his people and his forests is described by the three Towers,
which are re-elaborated into symbolic trunks with bay tree leaves (glory) and oak leaves (strength),
inspired by the emblem of the Republic, with the addition of the olive tree (peace).
