The reunification of the German state was officially sanctioned on 3 October 1990, not even one year after the fall of the Berlin Wall which for 28 years had literally split Germany and the whole of Europe in two. The territories of the German Democratic Republic, commonly called "East Germany", were formed into as many Länder (federal states) and formally joined the Federal Republic. San Marino celebrates the 25th anniversary of the reunification of Germany with a commemorative 2 euro coin designed by Erik Spiekermann, an internationally renowned German typeface designer and professor at the University of the Arts in Bremen. The coin features two representations of the Brandenburg Gate crossing like two hands, symbolizing the reunification of the two peoples. It was indeed the first place where the inhabitants of both sides of the Wall met after its fall. The Gate, completed in 1791, was located in East Berlin during the Cold War. Today it is the most famous monument in the city.
