The postal series celebrates Michelangelo Merisi, called Caravaggio, a troubled and brilliant painter who profoundly revolutionized the history of art, introducing the study of the truth and the violent use of light as a metaphor of God’s grace. The stamps reproduce three splendid masterpieces preserved at the prestigious Galleria Doria Pamphilj in Rome: "Penitent Magdalene", "San Giovanni Battista" and "Rest on the Flight into Egypt".
